Ethiopia and China Celebrate 55 Years of “All-Weather” Alliance

Beijing: As Ethiopia and China mark 55 years of diplomatic ties, Ambassador Tefera Derbew has affirmed the enduring strength of their relationship, describing it as a “deep-rooted, multifaceted” alliance that continues to flourish.

Speaking to China Daily, the Ambassador highlighted the remarkable evolution of the partnership, which he characterized as an “all-weather strategic alliance” built on robust cooperation and a shared commitment to advancing bilateral interests.

“Ethiopia and China have enjoyed a strong partnership, evolving into an all-weather strategic alliance,” Ambassador Derbew stated. “We have seen iconic projects such as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway, which stands as a testament to the strength of our collaboration.”

Beyond infrastructure, the Ambassador emphasized China’s significant contributions to Ethiopia’s energy sector, citing the Adama Wind Project as a prime example. The relationship, he stressed, extends far beyond these sectors, encompassing a diverse range of collaborative endeavours.

Cultural exchanges have also played a crucial role in strengthening ties between the two nations. Ethiopian students have pursued educational opportunities in China, benefiting from the country’s rich academic environment. Furthermore, initiatives such as the Confucius Institute and the Luban Workshop are actively promoting language education and vocational training in Ethiopia.

“These initiatives have led to significant knowledge transfer, cultural exchanges, and stronger people-to-people relations,” the Ambassador noted.

He underscored that over the past five and a half decades, Ethiopia and China have cultivated a mutually beneficial relationship that continues to deepen and expand across various domains. The enduring bond between the two nations reflects a shared commitment to cooperation and development, paving the way for continued collaboration in the years to come.
