Geita Exhibition Signals a New Phase of Discipline for Tanzania’s Mining Sector

Tanzania is positioning mining as a cornerstone of a much longer economic ambition. Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has directed the Ministry of Minerals to strengthen the management of the mining sector in order to enhance productivity in line with the country’s Development Vision 2050.

Nchemba issued the directive on 3 October 2026 during the closing ceremony of the Ninth National Mining Technology Exhibition, held at the Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan grounds in Geita Municipal Council. He said that, in line with the exhibition’s theme, Minerals are Wealth, Let Us Take Responsibility Together, everyone carries a responsibility to effectively manage the mining sector in order to achieve the objectives of National Vision 2050. “This theme has come at the right time, considering the vast mineral wealth that we have been blessed with as a nation,” said Nchemba.

He said the government had already begun implementing National Vision 2050, which provides a roadmap for building a competitive and inclusive economy driven by knowledge, innovation and the use of technology. Recognising the mining sector as an important pillar of the national economy, he said the government had amended the law requiring 10% of mineral revenues to be allocated to mineral exploration and research.

Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde said Tanzania had so far reached 16% in mineral exploration, adding that the new legislation would further strengthen management and expand exploration activities. He said education and training for small scale miners were continuing, aimed at ensuring they embrace the use of science and technology and move away from misconceptions involving the use of superstition in mining activities.

Geita Regional Commissioner Alexander Mnyeti said the Mining Technology Exhibition had continued to serve as a platform for expanding the use of technology in mining operations. “We must continue promoting the use of technologies that can identify mineral-rich areas, improve efficiency in mining and mineral processing, and reduce mineral losses,” said Mnyeti. He added that there is also a need to increase investment in mineral processing in Tanzania, so that the country does not remain merely a producer of minerals but becomes a key player throughout the mining value chain.

Managing Director of Geita Gold Mining Limited Ashraf Suryaningrat said the company is firmly committed to working with the government to develop the mining sector. He said that, in line with National Vision 2050, GGML is committed not only to producing mineral resources but also to developing skilled human resources with the knowledge and capacity required to advance modern mining.
