The Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed the country’s Ambassador to China, Khamis Mussa Omar, as the new Finance Minister following last month’s disputed election. Announcing the reshuffle in a televised address on 17 November 2025, she confirmed that Anthony Mavunde would remain as Mining Minister and Mahmoud Thabit Kombo would continue as Foreign Affairs Minister.
Hassan’s former Finance Minister, Mwigulu Nchemba, was named Prime Minister last week. The President was declared the landslide winner of the October 2025 poll, though the vote was overshadowed by violent clashes after the exclusion of her main opponents. Rights groups and opposition leaders claim hundreds of people were killed, a figure the government insists is exaggerated.
She has pledged to investigate the unrest and recently extended condolences to families who lost loved ones, marking her most direct public recognition of the turmoil that has triggered Tanzania’s most serious political crisis in decades.
