Glencore Renews Commitment to DRC Mining Amidst Challenges

Kinshasa, DRC – October 14, 2024 – Global mining giant Glencore has renewed its commitment to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) mining sector, highlighting its significant contributions to the country’s economy and its dedication to responsible mining practices.

At its annual conference in Kinshasa, Glencore showcased its operations, discussed industry challenges, and reaffirmed its partnership with the DRC government. The event brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, industry experts, and civil society representatives.

Glencore, a major player in the DRC mining industry, has been operating in the country since 2007. Its assets, including the Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and Mutanda Mining, have generated substantial revenue for the DRC government, with contributions reaching close to USD 1 billion in 2023 alone.

Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President of Glencore in the DRC, emphasized the company’s role in supporting the country’s development. “Glencore is committed to responsible mining practices that deliver lasting benefits to the DRC,” she stated. “We are working closely with the government, local communities, and international partners to ensure sustainable and ethical operations.”

The conference also addressed the challenges facing the DRC mining sector, including infrastructure constraints, regulatory hurdles, and the need for skilled labor. Glencore highlighted its ongoing efforts to address these challenges and promote a conducive business environment.

Mark Davis, CEO of Glencore Copper Africa, welcomed the recent renewal of KCC’s mining permits, a crucial step for the future of the company and the DRC’s mining industry. “This renewal demonstrates the DRC government’s commitment to attracting foreign investment and fostering a positive business climate,” he said.

Glencore’s commitment to responsible mining is evident in its adherence to international standards, such as the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) and the Copper Mark. These certifications ensure that the company’s operations meet the highest standards of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

As the DRC continues to play a pivotal role in the global minerals market, Glencore’s presence and commitment to responsible mining are essential for the country’s sustainable development. By working closely with all stakeholders, Glencore aims to contribute to a brighter future for the DRC and its people.
