The government of South Sudan has made its position on foreign mining investment explicit: investors are welcome and compliance with national law is non-negotiable. Minister of Mining Losuba Ludoru Wongo delivered that message directly to representatives of Sudan-based Bianchi Gold Trading Company following a meeting in Juba that covered geological mapping, economic diversification and frameworks for sustainable community development in mining areas.
“We are ensuring that any company that comes to invest in the mining sector must respect the laws, order and regulations of South Sudan, particularly on safe mining practices,” said Losuba. The government is working to improve transparency and strengthen regulation as it seeks responsible investment that delivers tangible benefits to local communities.
Bianchi Gold Trading’s General Manager Mahmoud Tageldin expressed appreciation for the engagement and said the company intends to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the ministry as part of plans to establish a long-term partnership. The delegation also met Vice President Professor James Wani Igga, who emphasised that South Sudan holds more than 22 different minerals, many still largely untapped and encouraged investment partnerships that create jobs and support economic growth.
The company’s stated areas of interest span mining, geology, agriculture, electricity, energy and petroleum, a breadth that reflects the multi-sector opportunity that South Sudan presents to investors willing to engage on the government’s terms.
