Every roof has its limits, and installers across sub Saharan Africa are looking for ways to get more from the space they have. Sungrow’s answer is the MGTL series, a new range of three phase hybrid inverters, covering 10 kW to 25 kW, now available in the region. A hybrid inverter combines solar and energy storage in a single unit, so homes and businesses can use more of their solar power, store it and stay resilient when the grid falters.
The series is said to support up to 250% PV oversizing, which means it can be paired with a solar array up to two and a half times its rated capacity, raising the potential energy yield and making better use of rooftop space. It handles PV input current of up to 20 A per string, works with high current solar modules and offers a wide Maximum Power Point Tracking voltage range, which is how an inverter keeps panels operating at their best output. It also features PID Zero technology, designed to protect the modules and support long term system performance.
“As solar adoption continues to grow across sub-Saharan Africa, making the most of every available unit of solar generation is becoming increasingly important. The MGTL series gives installers greater flexibility to design systems that can maximise PV generation and help customers get more value from their solar investment,” said Nigel Sun, Sungrow’s President for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Resilience is built in. The inverters offer 0 ms switching between grid tied and off grid modes, so connected loads keep running during an outage. They support up to 200% three phase unbalanced output, a maximum charge and discharge current of 440 A and up to two times AC overload capacity for ten seconds, which lets the system cope with demanding residential and commercial loads. The design also aims to make installation easier. Fanless operation keeps the units quiet and selected models carry a 4.3 inch touchscreen for local monitoring and adjustment.
“As hybrid solar and storage systems become more advanced, installers need solutions that are powerful without adding unnecessary complexity. The MGTL series combines key functions into a highly integrated platform, helping to simplify installation while giving customers greater flexibility in how they manage their energy,” said Sun.
Safety features are extensive. Standard arc fault circuit interruption, known as AFCI 3.0R, detects dangerous electrical arcs across cable runs of up to 200 m with a 20 A detection current, giving early warning of fire risk. The company also cites a patented explosion proof design with dual pressure relief, an IP66 rating, which means the unit is sealed against dust and powerful water jets, and C5 anti corrosion capability for harsh environments.
The inverters connect with Sungrow’s MBL120 and MBL160 battery series and a growing range of third party batteries, and the iSolarCloud platform gives users and installers real time system data and customisable energy management insights within what the company describes as a secure and open ecosystem.
