Tanzanian Gold Mine Strikes it Rich with Finnish Tech: Metso Lands Mammoth Mill Order

The dusty plains of northwest Tanzania are set to reverberate with the powerful hum of cutting-edge Finnish engineering, as mining giant Metso Corporation bags a colossal order exceeding €20 million to equip Sotta Mining’s burgeoning Nyanzaga gold project. The deal, announced yesterday, will see Metso deliver energy-efficient comminution equipment, including a behemoth Superior™ MKIII 4265 primary gyratory crusher and two Metso Plus Premier™ grinding mills boasting a combined power output of 21 megawatts.

This significant investment by Sotta Mining Corporation Ltd., an 80% owned subsidiary of Perth-based Perseus Mining Limited, underscores the growing confidence in the Nyanzaga project’s potential to become a major gold producer in the region. The selection of Metso’s advanced technology signals a clear focus on operational efficiency and sustainability.

Matt Cavedon, Perseus’s General Manager for Project Development, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Perseus is looking forward to the successful deployment of Metso’s state-of-the-art comminution technology, alleviating gearboxes with the benefits of precision control and high efficiency.”

The jewel in Metso’s offering for the Nyanzaga project lies in its Premier™ grinding mills, which eschew traditional gearboxes in favour of low-speed synchronous motor drives. This innovative design not only enhances reliability but also promises a significant 2% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional mills. Oskar Gustavson, Metso’s Technology Director for Grinding, highlighted the additional benefits: “Both mills are equipped with Metso’s fail-safe Polymer Hydrostatic Shoe Bearing systems, significantly increasing reliability and reducing maintenance costs.”

Metso’s Premier™ range is renowned for its customizability and cutting-edge technology, offering mining operators a potent combination of process expertise and design capability. Beyond the mills themselves, Metso provides a comprehensive suite of solutions, including pre-engineered Select™ mills, advanced relining equipment, and a diverse selection of liners, including their innovative Megaliner™. The company also offers extensive aftermarket support through inspection programs, Life Cycle Services contracts, and a full array of spare and wear parts.

The Superior™ MKIII primary gyratory crusher, another key component of the order, is engineered for high throughput and minimal downtime, further bolstering the Nyanzaga project’s operational efficiency.

This landmark order, booked in Metso’s Minerals segment for the first quarter of 2025, reinforces the Finnish firm’s position as a global leader in sustainable technologies for the mining and aggregates industries. With a strong emphasis on improving energy and water efficiency while boosting productivity and mitigating environmental risks, Metso continues to be a partner of choice for mining companies worldwide.

Headquartered in Espoo, Finland, Metso boasts a global footprint with nearly 17,000 employees across approximately 50 countries. In 2024, the company recorded sales of around €4.9 billion and is listed on the Nasdaq Helsinki. This latest win in Tanzania further solidifies their commitment to driving positive change within the mining sector.
