Tanzanian Mining Trainers Undergoing Specialised Training in Finland

Twenty-five instructors from Tanzania’s Vocational Education and Training Authority are currently participating in specialised training focused on mining and mineral value chains at REDU Edu College in Rovaniemi, Finland. This training is part of a European Union-funded programme aimed at developing the technical training capacity that Tanzania requires as its mining sector continues to expand.

The programme, titled “Vocational Pathway to Sustainable Critical Raw Minerals in Tanzania”, is being implemented through cooperation between VETA and development partners, including GIZ, GTK, SNL and REDU from Finland. VETA Director General CPA Anthony Kasore visited Rovaniemi to assess progress and meet with partner institutions. “That is why we held discussions with our colleagues from REDUEdu and GTK to assess the training arrangements, implementation progress and areas that may require improvement. All instructors should return ready to transform technical skills development and contribute to the growth of Tanzania’s mining industry,” said Kasore.

The programme reflects an important strategic logic. As Tanzania attracts growing investment in gold, graphite, nickel and emerging critical minerals, the main bottleneck is increasingly not capital or geology, but the capacity of a trained local workforce. VETA Director of Human Resources Enihart Mahudi reinforced the importance of the initiative: “Use this opportunity to learn as much as possible and protect the image of our country. The skills you acquire should help improve the mining sector and build the capacity of fellow trainers and citizens,” Mahudi said. Each instructor trained in Finland becomes a multiplier of technical capability within Tanzania, extending the programme’s impact far beyond the 25 individuals currently in Rovaniemi.
