Rwanda based mining company Trinity Metals has begun its inaugural sonic drilling programme at the Nyakabingo mine, a step the company says will materially expand its understanding of one of its core tungsten assets.
The programme comprises up to 106 planned drill holes at depths ranging from 12 to 20 metres, expected to generate around 210 samples for metallurgical testing and particle size distribution analysis, alongside 1,600 samples for laboratory grade analysis. Results will feed into an updated mineral reserve and resource statement, which Trinity says should significantly increase Nyakabingo’s mineral resources, providing greater confidence for future investment decisions and supporting planned expansions in both mining and mineral processing capacity.
Re-evaluation of the Nyakabingo stockpiled material alone is expected to add about 2.5 million tonnes to the resource base at an estimated grade of 0.3 percent tungsten trioxide. Trinity says the drilling and metallurgical testing results will support the ongoing study and design of a modern processing plant intended to optimise recovery from both run of mine and historical stockpiled material, an approach the company frames as central to its broader sustainability strategy of extracting value from legacy stockpiles while reducing the environmental footprint of new extraction.
The company says it has implemented strict quality assurance and quality control procedures, using only environmentally approved drilling fluids with certified material safety data sheets, with water generated during drilling collected through the mine’s existing water management infrastructure and safely contained within site water storage dams.
Following the Nyakabingo programme, Trinity plans to extend similar assessments to its Musha and Rutongo mines, building a group wide approach to maximising resource recovery and operational efficiency. Trinity chief executive Peter Geleta said unlocking additional value from the Nyakabingo stockpiles will significantly increase the company’s mineral resource base, creating new opportunities to lift production and entrench Trinity and Rwanda, as a leading global supplier of tungsten.
