Tanzania’s Lithium Boom: A Nation Forges its Place in the Global Battery Race

Tanzania is rapidly emerging as a key player in the global lithium market, capitalizing on strategic government initiatives and a surge of interest from international mining companies. A bold 2023 ban on raw lithium exports, designed to spur local processing and value addition, is proving to be a catalyst for investment, with a flurry of projects now underway.

The Tanzanian government is actively courting investors through a series of ambitious programs. The newly launched Tanzania Critical and Strategic Mineral Strategy, currently under stakeholder consultation, aims to streamline the management of crucial resources like lithium. This initiative seeks to facilitate exploration, mining, and local beneficiation, while strengthening supply chain resilience.

Further demonstrating its commitment, the Geological Survey of Tanzania has embarked on a 73 billion TZS High-Resolution Airborne Geophysical Survey. This nationwide initiative, aiming to map 50% of the country’s mineral wealth by 2030, will provide invaluable data for exploration and investment.

A strategic partnership with the Minerals Security Partnership, a coalition of 14 Western nations and the European Commission, further solidifies Tanzania’s position. This collaboration will enhance access to financing, share technical expertise, and fortify supply chains for critical minerals.

The private sector is responding enthusiastically. Australian firm AustChina has confirmed high-grade lithium deposits at its Chenene Project, while Dubai-based Titanium Lithium has identified significant lithium-bearing minerals at its Titan 1 and Titan 2 projects. U.S.-based CGrowth Capital has also reported lithium discoveries in the Dodoma Region.

These developments are set to take center stage at the upcoming African Mining Week, where Tanzanian lithium projects will be showcased to potential investors. The event, held alongside African Energy Week, will provide a platform for collaboration and highlight investment opportunities across Africa’s lithium value chain.

Tanzania’s strategic approach, combining proactive government policies with active private sector participation, is positioning the nation as a vital source of lithium, a critical component in the global transition to clean energy. The country’s commitment to local beneficiation and sustainable development is ensuring that the benefits of this resource boom are realized within its borders.
