President Samia Suluhu Hassan recently undertook a two day working visit to Angola, where she and President João Lourenço held bilateral talks deepening ties between the two nations. The visit culminated in the joint inauguration of the Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere Referral Hospital in Luanda, with members of the Nyerere family, led by Mama Maria Nyerere, joining both heads of state.
The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and explored fresh partnership opportunities, according to a statement from the Directorate of Presidential Communications. “The visit is a continuation of efforts to strengthen the historic and brotherly relations between Tanzania and Angola, established during Africa’s liberation struggles,” said the statement. Named for Tanzania’s founding president, the hospital stands as a physical symbol of a relationship rooted in the continent’s liberation movements. Samia also attended a fundraising dinner hosted by African First Ladies supporting programmes that empower women and young people across the continent.
The visit follows the Third Joint Permanent Commission, held at ministerial level in Luanda and co-chaired by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo and Angola’s Minister for External Relations, Téte António. Ministers reviewed progress on resolutions from the 2024 Zanzibar commission and mapped a roadmap forward, alongside signing a Memorandum of Understanding on Security and Public Order to strengthen cooperation on peace and public order.
Priority areas span diplomacy, defence, security, justice, trade and investment, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, transport, ICT, tourism, the blue economy, health, education, gender equality, sport and culture. To deepen economic ties, the two countries agreed to organise a joint business delegation and a Tanzania Angola Business Forum. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability across the region, particularly within SADC and the Great Lakes Region, backing dialogue as the most effective route to resolving conflict and pledging continued support for peace initiatives led by the African Union, SADC, the ICGLR and the United Nations.
