Rwanda Resumes Beryllium Exports After Four-Month Suspension

Kigali, Rwanda – Rwanda has lifted a four-month suspension on beryllium exports, allowing the resumption of shipments of the lightweight metal used in various industries, including aerospace, defense, electronics, and nuclear energy.

The Rwanda Mines, Petroleum, and Gas Board (RMB) announced the decision on November 25, following a comprehensive inspection of mines and exporter premises. The regulator emphasized the importance of compliance with stringent export procedures, including traceable mineral sources and proof of purchase.

The suspension, imposed in August, was aimed at addressing concerns about illegal mining activities and streamlining the beryllium business. The RMB’s decision to lift the ban indicates that measures have been taken to ensure regulatory compliance and sustainable mining practices.

Rwanda’s mining sector is a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with mineral exports reaching $1.1 billion in 2023. The government has been actively promoting value addition to minerals as a means to further boost economic growth and diversification.

The resumption of beryllium exports is a positive development for Rwanda’s mining industry. By adhering to strict regulations and promoting responsible mining practices, the country can position itself as a reliable supplier of critical minerals to the global market.
