SGS Expands East Africa Mining Services, Targets Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – SGS, a global leader in inspection and certification services, is bolstering its presence in East Africa’s mining industry by expanding its analytical capabilities in Tanzania. The strategic move aims to capture a larger share of the market by offering comprehensive testing and consulting services to mining clients.

SGS’s expansion comes as East Africa’s mining sector experiences significant growth. The company, which has been operating in Tanzania since 1962, is focusing on providing services that meet international standards for quality, safety, and sustainability.

A key part of this strategy is the enhancement of SGS’s laboratory in Mwanza, northern Tanzania. The facility, which is already ISO- and IEC-accredited, will now offer a wider range of geochemical analyses, including various methods for testing gold and other minerals. This expanded capacity will enable SGS to provide faster turnaround times and more precise data, giving clients a competitive edge.

The company is also deploying mobile sample preparation units to remote locations. These units facilitate on-site services, enabling clients to transition from exploration to production more efficiently.

In addition to its technical services, SGS is emphasizing its role as a provider of business intelligence. The company offers independent data collection and reporting services to help clients make informed decisions and navigate regulatory requirements.

SGS is also investing in local talent, with 98% of its employees in Tanzania being highly skilled Tanzanian professionals. This commitment to localizing skills and creating job opportunities is expected to contribute to the country’s economic growth and strengthen its position in the global mining industry.
