Marula Mining, an African mining and development company, has unearthed a significant high-grade manganese ore deposit in Kilifi County, Kenya, a discovery that could significantly boost the profitability of its Kilifi Manganese Processing Plant.
The company revealed that channel samples taken from the Ganze region, a key area for supplying the Kilifi Plant, returned assays of up to 71.01% manganese content. This is a substantial improvement over the lower- to medium-grade deposits typically found in the area.
Jason Brewer, Marula Mining PLC CEO, expressed his excitement about the find, stating, “This high-grade zone of mineralization has the potential to significantly impact the project economics of our Kilifi operation.” He added, “It further demonstrates the untapped potential that exists in Kilifi County.”
The discovery comes as Marula prepares to commence processing operations at the Kilifi Plant in September 2024. The plant is set to receive monthly supplies of 10,000 tonnes of manganese ore from the Ganze region under a supply agreement with Kitmin Holdings Limited.
The high-grade manganese ore can either be processed separately to produce a premium product or blended with lower-grade ore to create a higher-value saleable final product. This flexibility offers Marula significant advantages in the market.
As Marula ramps up operations at the Kilifi Plant, the company is also actively negotiating additional supply agreements and exploring potential acquisitions to further expand its manganese production capacity.
Brewer concluded by saying, “We are confident that the Kilifi Plant will not only contribute significantly to Kenya’s economy but will also provide a solid foundation for Marula’s growth in East Africa.”
