Mining Conference 2024: Tanzania the Next Graphite Giant?

Tanzania is poised to become a global powerhouse in graphite mining, with the potential to rank sixth worldwide and third in Africa by 2050. This ambitious projection, outlined in a recent World Bank report, has sparked significant interest in the country’s mining sector.

The nation’s vast graphite reserves, estimated at nearly 5% of the global total, have attracted substantial attention from both domestic and international investors. Key graphite projects such as Lindi Jumbo, Bunyu, Chilalo, Epanko, Mahenge, Nachu, and Bagamoyo are at various stages of development, from exploration to production.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

Tanzania’s Mining Vision 2030 aims to reduce risks for investors by conducting extensive geological research in under-explored areas. This proactive approach, coupled with the expansion of high-resolution airborne surveys, is expected to improve exploration accuracy and bolster investor confidence.

The country is also focusing on value addition by establishing processing and refining facilities within its borders. The upcoming Kabanga Nickel multi-metal smelter in Kahama is a prime example of this strategy, which will not only create jobs but also attract further investment.

A Collaborative African Approach

Dr. Venance Mwasse, Managing Director of the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO), emphasized the importance of regional cooperation among African nations. By working together, African countries can establish a robust mining value chain, maximizing the benefits of their abundant mineral resources.

Tanzania’s strategic location, coupled with its government’s supportive policies and infrastructure development initiatives, has positioned the country as a key player in the global graphite market. As the demand for graphite continues to soar, driven by the burgeoning electric vehicle industry and other technological advancements, Tanzania is well-placed to capitalize on this opportunity and solidify its position as a leading mining nation.
